If you smell gas, immediately put out all smoking materials and any open flames. In addition, don’t use any lights, telephones, appliances or cell phones as flames or sparks from these devices can trigger an explosion or fire. If you smell propane that you think might be leaking, you should immediately leave the area and evacuate the building or area you suspect that gas might be leaking. Once you’ve left the area, you should locate and shut off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank, if it is safe to do so.
Once you’ve exited the area and are safely away from the source of the smell, you should report the leak from a neighbor’s home or other nearby location by calling Johnson Gas immediately. If you can’t reach your propane retailer, call 911 or the local fire department immediately. More than anything, do not return to the building until your propane retailer or local fire department has determined that it is safe to proceed.
Finally, you should always have a qualified and trained service technician from your local propane retailer perform a complete system check and any of your propane appliances to make sure they remain completely free of leaks before you attempt to use any of them.
